Film Making School
There are many skills to learn in order to gain a career in the film industry. Practical training is available at several prestigious Film Making Schools. London is a city much involved in this field and the London Film Academy has proved a good launching pad for its graduates. The Academy runs the Club Panico, an organization dedicated to assisting students to find employment on graduating. Its patrons are Terry Gilliam and Ben Kinsley. Tutors here are professional filmmakers and pass on their wealth of experience as well as knowhow. Students learn how to use Super 16mm film and digital equipment. They leave with showreels to show to prospective employers. The curriculum offers a 1 Year Filmmakers Diploma and there are also a wide range of Specialized Courses, including Directors Workshop, Editing, Making Commercials, Making Documentaries, Screenplays, and Music in Film. Guest speakers at this Film Making School have included the directors, Terence Davies, Danny Boyle and Paul Greengrass.
Another London establishment is present with the London Film School. Its programme offers an MA Filmmaking course and an MA Screenwriting course. The Ma Filmmaking students receive hands on training and make their own films, learning the different aspects of shooting and editing. It is an intensive 2 Year course and the minimum admission requirement is a 3 Year University degree or equivalent working experience. For students wanting short workshops, there are sessions for Directing, Cinematography, Editing, Sound and Music, Production Design, and Documentaries. The workshops take place on evenings and at weekends, making it convenient for people in employment.
New York Film Academy is an exciting environment in a happening city in the media. The Film Making School offers an intensive practical skill based Fine Arts Degree over 2 Years. The Academy also runs Summer Film Camps. New York is not the only location for this film school and there are campuses at Universal Studios in Hollywood, in Paris, London, (see above), Rome, Beijing, and Tokyo. Students learn about camera work, lighting, and editing. There are also 1 and 2 Year Conservatory Programs in Producing, Documentaries, Screenwriting, Cinematography and 3D Animation. There are also Short Term Intensive Filmmaking Workshops covering Digital Filmmaking, Digital Editing, Film Production, and Cinema Studies. Several high profile guests have worked with students here, including Kevin Kline, Jon Voight, Matthew Modine, and Gabriel Byrne.
Denver is the location for the Colorado Film School, which has been in existence since 1993. There is a choice of degree programs with a different concentration, such as Writing and Directing, Producing, Post Production or Cinematography. The faculty uses the best equipment available and each student has access to state of the art editing labs and suites, and sound labs and suites. Students are given the opportunity to present their work at Student Shows twice each year. There are also Certificate Programs, designed to give advance training to professional people already forging careers in film. This Film Making School is respected in the industry and a number of guest speakers have attended, such as Wim Wenders, Spike Lee, and Bertrand Tavernier.
