Spongebob Squarepants first made his appearance on television in 1999, and he?s been on air ever since without showing signs of departing anytime soon, proving to have considerable staying power and influence. Spongebob Squarepants is a household name that?s ingrained itself into our pop culture and spawned all sorts of merchandise and media. In addition to Spongebob Squarepants episodes that regularly air on Nickelodeon, there?s even a Spongebob movie, aptly named The Spongebob Squarepants Movie. That?s not bad for a humble fry cook hailing from Bikini Bottom. Spongebob?s success is due to his appeal to a wide audience. Spongebob Squarepants started out as a simple kid?s cartoon but it has an audience with teens and adults as well as children. Spongebob Squarepants episodes are silly and whimsical, yet full of clever innuendo that a more mature audience can appreciate.

Spongebob Squarepants episodes tend to center around certain themes regarding its characters. There?s Patrick?s stupidity, Squidward?s grumpiness and mediocrity, Mr. Krabs? insatiable love of money, Plankton?s evil scheming, Sandy?s Texan heritage, and Spongebob?s cheerful simplicity. Many Spongebob episode plotlines focus on these aspects of the character?s personalities. For example, the audience knows that Patrick isn?t the brightest star in Bikini Bottom, so it?s hilarious when Patrick stupidly lands in a field of brain coral, a piece of which gets switched with his head and temporarily makes him into a genius. Squidward?s megalomania and dissatisfaction with his current lifestyle makes for a whole lot of humorous situations in which he fails miserably at trying to succeed and becomes driven to insane, neurotic behavior that contrasts his usual solemn, grouchy disposition. Mr. Krabs causes a lot of trouble for everyone by being greedy, ranging from sending others on unreasonable quests like delivering pizza from his restaurant that only serves Krabby patties to framing Patrick for pearl theft. Plankton can?t upstage Mr. Krabs? business despite his superior intellect, which leads him to resort to desperate, futile attempts at stealing the Krabby Patty recipe. Sandy?s alien status evokes homesickness, a plethora of Texas references and a recurring comparison between land and sea. Lastly, there?s Spongebob Squarepants, who succeeds at everything he does without even wanting to or trying, often to Squidward?s chagrin. These motifs are what make the Spongebob characters popular and endearing and Spongebob Squarepants episodes humorous and seemingly timeless. All in all, Spongebob Squarepants is enjoyable and easily accessible to an appreciative audience.
